If you’ve been following my blog for a while you will know that I post a summary of our home education journey for each month. This is mostly to remind me of what progress we’ve made over the months and years. But also so others can see that education doesn’t have to take the form of sit down and filling in workbooks. It can be whatever suits the child, some enjoy workbooks (I certainly did as a child, I even made up my own workbooks! Ha ha!), but others may prefer to be outside or to follow a particular passion. If the child has choice in their learning and chooses their method you will find that it will work. So follow your child’s lead and see where their educational journey takes them!
Anyway, enough of that, here is what the kids have been doing this month!

History
The kids particularly love learning about history at that moment. When we’re in the car they like to listen to Greeking Out Podcast and are pretty knowledgeable about Greek gods and myths as a result! They also like History Storytime podcast and have learnt about Captain Cook and Genghis Khan amongst other things.
We often read a variety of history books each week. The kids have a selection to choose from including Horrible Histories and I Wouldn’t Want To Be series. We’ve also got some fiction stories and magazines that include different legends and myths from history.
The kids have been keen to learn more about Viking gods so we’ve also been reading and Googling about them too. Although it’s usually Greek gods they like to play in all there games with friends at the moment! Littlest also got various Greek Playmobil gods and the ship the Argo for his birthday, perfect for acting out stories together.
Science
Podcasts also extend to our science interests. With both Wow in The World and Tumble Science podcasts being popular with the kids. They love listening to the new episodes, but also spend a lot of car journeys listening to their old favourites too.
The eldest was given some of the Mel Science kits for Christmas. So he’s had fun trying a few out, he particularly like the kits where you use flames! Testing out different soft metals in the flames to see what colour the flame changed was fun.
Of course the kids both loved playing with Lego this month. With many builds throughout the month including space craft, trains and buildings!
We started watching the documentary Green Planet this month. The kids have enjoyed learning more about plants. The tropical rainforest and desert episodes were particular favourites.
At the end of the month we visited Edinburgh Zoo with friends. The kids enjoyed watching the red pandas and giraffes. Although I’m sure their favourite part was just playing together with their friends!
Geography
For geography we have our usual discussions at the dinner table. The eldest also like to look at the map and world place mats whilst eating.
As we headed to Lanzarote we also had a look at where the island was and which country it belonged to. Lanzarote is volcanic so there were many discussions about the rocks, lava tubes that we explored and general picking up of every rock we found!
It’s safe to say they learnt a lot more about volcanoes and types of rock. This included buying some rocks to take home!
English
The eldest has spent a lot of time reading various books from the library and from Christmas presents. We have quite a few to get through, but he’s definitely managed to make a dent this month.
He’s also spent some time reading stories to his little brother. He’s read him all the Dog Man books and has now begun reading some other stories too. Littlest loves this and it’s nice to see them having some time bonding rather than arguing with each other!
The eldest has taken to making up comics, he annotates them with some writing. Which has given him a bit more practice. The youngest has taken to copying and making comics too, although he’s not at the stage of annotating without some help. Littlest has been practicing reading via the Reading Eggs app.
Maths
The eldest has occasionally played Mathseeds this month, which is great for primary school maths.
However most of our maths this month has been through board games. El Dorado is a favourite of the eldest and involves some maths and logic. He’s also been enjoying doing Sudoku using our new wooden Sudoku game.
Outdoor Time – Home Education
We’ve begun a new challenge for 2022 where we are attempting the 1000 hours outside challenge. In winter this clearly means we are attempting to go out more often even when the weather is pretty rubbish! Most our adventures in Scotland have been around 2-3 hours long outside and not every day as we have other things on or the weather has been completely awful with torrential rain or gale force winds!
Despite the rubbish weather we did manage to go on various walks throughout the month or playing in outdoor areas. Sometimes it’s nice to just have a quite space in the woods to play in a stream and roll logs!!
Playing at the park is always fun for the kids, although a bit cold for me! They have had a lot of fun at various parks playing different games and attempting unusual ways of going down slides.
At the very end of the month we headed off to Lanzarote for a week. This was perfect for outdoor time as we spent a lot of time outside, around 8-10 hours a day, partly as there was a park across from the place we were staying, the weather was warm and dry so we could spend the whole day outside, including dinner!
Clubs and Groups
The kids have had fun back at their indoor climbing home education group. Managing to get pretty high up the walls and even to the top most of the time for the eldest. The youngest has found a couple of routes he can get to the top, but easily manages the bouldering walls too.
Both children are in Beavers or Cub Scouts, which they have enjoyed attending and earning badges. As well as dodgeball which they really seem to love!
Littlest also does gymnastics, drama and dancing. Although unfortunately his dancing class has had to close down and now he’s trying out a different one. He’s also taken up another theatre group which he absolutely loves as they have an hour each of singing, dancing and acting. He also has swimming lessons once a week.
