Completely behind with writing this! With both kids getting chicken pox and busy with lots of other things, I seem to have forgotten to write this until now. Anyway, March was a good month (April not so much with illnesses!). We did a lot of fun activities and the kids learnt a lot, which is clearly good news being a home educator. Here is what the kids learnt through home education in Scotland.

History
The kids have been learning a lot about the Ancient Greeks as always. Their favourite podcast is currently Greeking Out, which has some fab stories to learn about the Ancient Greeks. They also like to read various books about the history of the Ancient Greeks and also the Egyptians.
Another favourite podcast is History Storytime, which has two young girls talking about different stories from history. They do an amazing job with a little help from their dad!
Both children were also given a geology hammer recently and have had taken great delight in breaking off pieces of rock to inspect them. A fantastic way to learn more about the history of the earth through ancient pieces of sediment and volcanic activity.
On our way South on a press trip to Cumbria we stopped at Gretna Green. The kids enjoyed looking around the buildings and learning a little about why Gretna Green was so famous. Along with exploring some of the sculpture work and visiting the play park!
Both kids enjoy playing Horrible Histories board game, which has meant we’ve all learnt a lot! This has also led on to them watching the Horrible Histories TV series, which is fantastic for the kids to learn more about history.
Whilst visiting Cumbria we also visited the Dock Museum. It tells the history of the area in and around Barrow-In-Furness. Lots of history about the different ships and also the Vikings and Blitz.
Geography – Home Education Scotland
We haven’t really added any extra information to the kids geography knowledge. But we do still look at the maps on the walls very often. Including the world map, which we like to play ‘find that country’ with.
Science
Both children were given practical ‘kits’ for Christmas. The eldest has been using his inventors kit recently to build some new items. First he made a working fan and then he added a sundial too. Not quite sure of the purpose of this multi-use invention, but nice to see him putting things together.
Whilst out on our walks the kids have spotted a lot of frogspawn and even some that have already turned into tadpoles! Seems early for tadpoles, but nice to see them developing quickly!
In Cumbria we also visited the South Lakes Safari Zoo, which was a big highlight for the kids. We were able to feed many different animals, including giraffes, penguins, lemurs, jaguar and wolves! It was fantastic to see the animals up close and great biology lesson!
The South Walney Nature Reserve is fantastic for families, a lovely walk around the reserve and plenty to see. The kids enjoyed seeing the different birds and the seals during our quick visit.
Maths – Home Education Scotland
Both children have begun using Prodigy Maths, a free maths app that is great for both home educated and schooled kids. The kids have mostly learnt about maths through board games and a little real life use of money (although less so recently due to the pandemic). It’s great to see them enjoying to learn about maths and actually seeming to pick it up pretty quick.
Of course we’ve still be playing board games too. Most board games require some knowledge of maths too. Including Monopoly for money or El Dorado for buying different cards.
English
I always read books to the children every day. So they are used to a wide vocabulary of words and different types of stories as well as fact reading from non-fiction books.
The eldest enjoys reading his own books too, so I let him just get on with reading whatever he wants to! The youngest is still learning to read, so he’s been continuing with Reading Eggs and also spelling other words he sees out loud.
Both children aren’t very confident with writing, although the eldest tends to practice more. Mostly when he’s annotating his drawings.
Outdoor Time
We’ve spent a lot of time outdoors this month and have almost completed the first 200 hours of the 1000 hours outside challenge this year. Our time outdoors has included walks in the Trossachs, which is always a stunning place to visit.
Plenty of park visits, including this one with great monkey bars for the kids to practice on. Littlest has great arm strength!
Or walks to find more evidence of Beavers and further explore areas we know well!
Clubs and Groups – Home Education Scotland
The kids have attended their usual clubs and groups. The youngest had his last day at Beavers and is moving up to Cubs after Easter. The eldest finished Cubs and is currently on the waiting list for a place at Scouts (currently full unfortunately!).
They’ve also both had great fun at their home ed climbing sessions. They’ve started the level 1 NICAS course and are happily belaying each other up the walls.
They also both do dodgeball and littlest has continued his dancing, drama, Stagecoach and gymnastics. The youngest loves to do all the classes available!
We meet with other home educators too, enjoying making a ‘play in a day’ and just hanging out with friends.
