A short but busy month for us. There has been no extra trips anywhere this month, but we did have a week of the regular activities for the February half term. Now we’re completely back into our regular routine for another month until Easter!

History

It’s definitely been quiet here this month, however we did manage a visit to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The new exhibition, Giants, was our main reason to visit, and it was definitely worth it! Seeing giant structures made to the same size as ancient mega animals, including giant snakes, sharks and even a mammoth. They also has various replicas from fossils to admire too.

We also explored other parts of the museum, including going downstairs to see the beginning of Scotland section. It tells the story of Scotland, in particular about how it was formed, geology and first animals.

I have also spent time reading the first volume of Sapiens with the youngest (the eldest has read some on his own previously), which is a graphic hard back book about how humans evolved.

Other history learning has included listening to podcasts, including Greeking Out. Although I. Need to begin listening to the Rest Is History with the kids too.

Geography

At the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh we visited the beginning of Scotland section downstairs. It includes a lot of information about geology, tectonic plates and formation of mountains. All of which are key parts of physical geography.

Science

We managed to fit in a walk along Loch Ard in the Trossachs and Loch Lomond National Park. Spotting our first frogspawn of the year. It was nice to see a sign of spring on the way and hopefully watching the lifecycle of frogs again!

Our visit to the National Museum of Scotland also included a visit to the Giants exhibition. Which is all about ancient mega species of animals that are now extinct. We also had a visit to the technology section, which the kids always love.

And of course we’ve been listening to lots of science based podcasts, with the Rest of Science being a particular favourite at the moment.

Maths

We’ve been continuing with Beast Academy for both children, reinforcing maths knowledge and learning some new topics. It seems to be going well and their maths skills are definitely improving.

As we also listen to the Rest Is Science the children also have learnt about some theoretical maths through the podcast. Hannah Fry and Michael Stevens are the hosts and they definitely enjoy chatting about maths!

Finally, the kids have also been continuing with their Minecraft education coding lessons. They are definitely getting quite good with code now! I don’t understand a lot of what theyre doing!

Language

Both children love reading, the eldest is currently going through a phase of reading books he’s already read many times. The youngest prefers to read by listening to audio books and has listened to a variety of different stories over the month.

The youngest has also had weekly lessons with a dyslexic tutor, which helps his reading fluency. He is certainly getting better with his reading fluency, although his default is still to ask someone else to read larger sections of text as it’s too overwhelming.

Clubs and Groups

The children have both had their usual groups, with board games club, D&D group, Lego group and dodgeball. Plus the youngest has dancing (tap, ballet, modern, acro and commercial), drama, gymnastics, Scouts, lead climbing, choir and rehearsals for a local theatre group show.

There are more than enough clubs and groups around to keep them busy!

Socialisation

On top of the above groups and clubs, we also meet our home educated friends at the park twice a week. Alongside playing with other schooled friends too. The youngest also had his birthday day out at Go Ape with his brother and a friend.

Every day our kids see some friends and certainly have plenty of socialisation. It’s never been something we’ve worried about!

Art and Music

There were no arty activities this month, but the youngest has been having singing lessons for a few weeks. He seems to be doing well, mostly practicing breathing techniques and posture for trying to project his voice better.

Of course he’s been practicing singing a lot as well!

Physical Education

There has been plenty of physical education, including walking locally, playing in the woods and parks with friends.

There has been children have also been out on their bikes and scooters playing on our street.
