We began the month still in the school holidays, with musical theatre shows and fun with friends. Then it was back to the normal routine for the rest of the month. Except we spent 5 days in Cornwall visiting friends in the middle of the month! It’s been a busy month, but we have managed to squeeze in some learning too!

History

Whilst in Cornwall we visited a tin mine at Wheal Coates, with dramatic coastal views and some awesome history. The kids had fun exploring the stone buildings, dropping stones into the mine shaft to hear the depth and walking along the pretty paths.

We also visited a china clay mill near Foxhole. It’s marked as the Hidden Valley beside the current china clay quarry, but it was extremely interesting! The kids had a lot of fun exploring the site and learning about the mill. They also liked the rope swings we found over the river!

Aside these days out the eldest has watched some of the latest A House Through Time series. This series is analysing the occupants of an Edinburgh house on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It’s a great way to learn about history through the one building.

Additionally we’ve listened to a few history podcasts and had discussions on history too.

Geography

The kids have tried the challenge mode on their old interactive globe. Attempting to find the most countries on the globe. They are good at some of the more common countries, but they need more practice on the less common ones! The eldest is getting much better at it though.

Whilst driving too and from Cornwall from Scotland we checked in on Google maps to see where we were. This was helpful for the kids to see exactly where we were.

With all the wildfires raging across the UK and further afield, it’s been interesting to discuss the cause with the kids. And also how our changing climate has increased the incidence of wildfires.

Science

The kids have enjoyed listening to various science podcasts, particularly The Rest Is Science. We’ve also watched a few documentaries mentioning science topics, such as David Attenborough’s The Final Day. This is about how scientists have used palaeontology to work out what happened on the final day of dinosaurs on earth around the Gulf of Mexico.

We have of course always had mini discussions about scientific topics, and even found a giant starfish in the sea whilst in Cornwall. We lifted it up to move it to the rock pools, where it would be safe and wouldn’t be stepped on!

Maths

The kids have slowly got back into their maths program they have been working on this year. With the youngest working on angles and the eldest moving onto exponents, with emphasis on perfect squares.

Maths is also involved in day-to-day life with cooking, making things and just general chat.

Language

Both children love stories, although the youngest tend to listen to longer books via audio book, but reading shorter graphic stories from the library. The eldest has mostly been reading non-fiction magazines and books about trains.

The eldest also chose to create his own train top trumps cards, writing out all the information he needed by hand first, then typing it all onto the computer using Canva to create cards. Later in the month he went back and created some more cards for the collection and added a description of each train.

Clubs and Groups

Clubs and groups only started back in the 2nd or 3rd week of August. But the youngest had show in a week for the musical Frozen. And we had a few groups back, including dancing and gymnastics at the beginning of the month.

Everything else restarted in the last week or two, with the youngest doing climbing, dancing, gymnastics, drama and Scouts. We also had a home ed Lego session and board games group too.

Socialisation

The kids have had plenty of time with friends, whether it’s our usual home ed friends, visiting friends further afield or theatre friends for the youngest. It’s been a lot of fun for everyone, the kids never complain they are lonely, we see other home ed friends at least 3 times a week, plus after school groups or walking to friends houses nearby.

Art and Music

As I love art it always surprises me that neither of my kids enjoy art that much! But the youngest loves musical theatre and has had a couple of singing lessons this month. He’s also trying to learn the Irish penny whistle he bought on holiday last month.

In Cornwall we visited the circus and saw some great theatrical feats too. Which was pretty awesome!

Physical Education

Both kids are fairly active, even at home they are often running about doing different active activities in or outside the house. They also had fun cycling at a bike park, body boarding, pier jumping and walking in Cornwall.

The youngest also has a lot of active classes, so has plenty of exercise!
