
A bit late with this as we’ve been away on Mull for a week at the beginning of July, so I took a week off blogging. We had great fun playing on the beaches and looking for wildlife, the Puffins were definitely the family favourite!
Here’s what we learnt in June.

The 6 Year Old
Art and Design
- Creating sand art in bright colours.
- Making a pirate ship.
- Making kites.
- Colouring in spinning tops.
- Drawing pictures in his journal of castles and buildings.
- Drawing chalk train tracks on the path outside.
Science
- Finding and identifying different freshwater insects in a nearby stream with their home ed science group, using the kick sample method.

- Exploring wind power by creating gliders out of two circular strips and a paper straw.
- Creating rockets out of film canisters and alka seltzers.
- Watching how pressure can build up in a small bottle to make it fly up into the air like a rocket.

- Experimenting with different colours in water and how they mix to make new colours.
- Learning about turtle rehabilitation and other sealife at Pula aquarium.

- Learnt how sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous rocks were formed.
- Learning about the different parts of the ocean, including the continental shelf, midnight zone and deep sea trenches.
- Held a giant millipede and cockroach.

- Exploring butterfly world and observing the different life stages of butterflies.
- Experimenting with creating kites to find the best design.
Language
- Reading stories together every day.
- Pointing out what letter words begin with and helping his brother identifying letters.
- Spelling words out and reading known short sight words.

- Writing words with help for spelling in both his journal and every day play.
Maths
- Counting money for buying items on holiday.
- Playing board games together.
History

- Learning about Roman gladiators in Croatia and why they used Pula amphitheatre.

- Learning about Dinosaur footprints and how they came to be in Croatia.
- Visited Craigmillar castle and explored its history.
- Looked at famous modern art from the last century.

- Visited Lancaster Castle and learnt about the history or prisons and some famous occupants.
- Visited Lancaster Maritime Museum and learnt about the history of shipping and the slave trade.
Geography
- Discussed the different types of rock and how they are formed, sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous.
- Visited Croatia and can now recognise the flag and knows roughly where it is in Europe.
Social Groups
- Met with friends in the woods and had campfires.

- Met friends at Historic Scotland sites and played together.
- Weekly Beavers meetings, including several outdoor trips.
- Weekly home education meet.
- Weekly home education science group, with time to play afterward.
- Weekly drama group.
Sports
- Continuing to enjoy swimming and is improving well, also plenty of swimming on holiday.
- Weekly multi-sports group where they try different skills each week.
- Playing outdoors A LOT!
- Climbing trees and showing ability to hang from branches (no need for a gym here!).

- Attended a session using a ropes course whilst in Croatia.
- Cycling in the area.
The 4 Year Old
Art & Design
- Creating sand art in bright colours.

Exercise
- Took part in his ballet and tap show, with two dances on stage in front of a large audience.
- Ropes course whilst on holiday in Croatia.

- Practising cricket.
- Weekly multi-sports class.
- Playing in rivers barefoot, around streams, woodlands and open grassland areas with friends.

- Swimming whilst on holiday and getting use to having his face wet, going under water a little bit.
- Cycling around the local area.
Maths
- Counting easily to 20, working on understanding the numbers thereafter.
- Playing board games.
Reading
- Recognising the capital letter of his name, his brother’s and ‘m’ for mummy.
- Reading daily as a family.
History
