Yes, I know it’s almost the end of April and I will have the April post to finish very soon! However, it’s been a hectic end to March and we’ve been away most the Easter Holidays. So I’m only now getting round to writing the latest home education diary.
March was mostly spent at home, the littlest had lots of shows and rehearsals. So we haven’t been able to do any travelling around until the last week, when we visited Northumberland.
However, there has been plenty of learning happening around the rest of the chaos!
Table of Contents
History
Although a lot of the month was spent at home, we also visited a few areas around Falkirk and Northumberland. In Falkirk the children learned about the Antonine Wall and the battle of Falkirk, plus the history of Falkirk itself. Then in Northumberland we spent a lot of time exploring the Roman sites along Hadrian’s Wall and learning more about the Romans in Northumberland.
Of course we also fit in a couple of visits to castles too, both Alnwick castle and Blackness. They’ve visited both castles before, but it was good to visit again and repeat a few things they’ve learnt before. Admittedly they were mostly interested in Harry Potter locations at Alnwick! We did make some clay shields too!
Of course we also listened to various history podcasts including Greeking Out (repeats!) and Who, When, Wow. Books including history have also been pretty important this month. Mostly Greek history, but also some other themes too!
Science – Home Education Report
The kids have enjoyed listening to their usual science podcasts this month, including Tumble, Wow In The World, Mysteries of Science and Flip & Mozi’s Guide To How To Be Earthling. We have also been reading the new copy of Whizz Pop Bang and trying out some experiments too.
Whilst in Northumberland we visited Newcastle and the Life science centre. It’s a fantastic place to learn about science, forces and space. With a particularly good exhibition on living in space on the ISS. We also visited lambs at a local farm and learnt a little more about sheep biology.
Maths
Maths has mostly been working with Prodigy Maths app, which the kids dip in and out of. This usually depends on how much time we have at home, but as it’s been quite wet they’ve had plenty of time for this.
We’ve also played board games as usual and the kids have built various Lego inventions – engineering and maths!
English – Home Education Report
The eldest is working his way through the Harry Potter books series again, he’s finished the 5th book this month and started the 6th one. He’s getting very quick at reading and it’s hard work keeping enough interesting books around for him to read! I finally found his Kindle again, so we can download some more longer books for him to work his way though.
The youngest is practising reading with Reading Egg. He’s certainly getting better at reading. However, I think it’s easier for him to just ask someone to read words to him rather than try himself. Once we have a bit more time I think it will be useful to just practice reading some younger library books. We’ve tried some of the easy readers before, but he usually finds them boring as he’s used to us reading the exciting chapter books to him!
Art and Crafts – Home Education Report
The children have completed a 4 week art course this month with a local art group in Perth. I love the ethos of the group and the fact it is all about the process and not on creating any particular finished project. There are no wrongs or rights, just different techniques to try.
They made wooden sculptures, large paintings and ModRoc sculptures as part of the course. Hopefully they will be able to join the course again later in the year for another few weeks. It’s not a regular thing, but a month course 2-3 times a year, which suits us well.
We also visited a variety of sculpture at Kielder Forest Park. They were interesting to see and helpful for the kids to see ideas of sculptures being abstract.
1000 Hours Outside
We’ve managed quite a few walks outdoors, but most have been shorter walks due to time pressures of the kids various activites. However, there has also been plenty of time outside playing with friends, despite the inclement weather this month.
I’m hopefully that this year we will manage to finish the entire 1000 hours outdoors! We’re certainly working our way through their outdoor colouring charts!
Clubs and Groups
The children have both being doing their usual groups and clubs. These include Scouts/Cubs, dodgeball and chess club. Plus gymnastics, drama, swimming and dancing for littlest. The eldest was pleased to win the dodgeball trophy for player of the week too.
The youngest has also had his dance show (ballet, tap and modern), which was fab to see how much he has progressed. Plus a show for his drama group and another local theatre show of Seussical Jr that had 3 shows over 2 days. Exhausting!!
