Puertito de Guimar, Tenerife: Muchosol Apartment

We were hosted in the apartment by Muchosol, all other activities were organised and paid for by ourselves.

In cold wet winter’s like this one, most of us would be ecstatic to be heading off to somewhere warm and sunny.  That was definitely a good decision for us when we left Glasgow for Tenerife on a cold and snowy March morning.

We arrived on Tenerife dressed in jeans and t-shirts, sweltering in the midday sun.  Fortunately it wasn’t long before we were in our hire car and on the way to pick up keys for the Tenerife Muchosol apartment we would be staying in.  Near El Medino we found the office where I met the representative of the company who had the keys for us.  I was given a detailed description of how to find the apartment, along with information of good places to eat and places to visit around the island.

Once we arrived at our apartment complex in Puertito de Guimar, we parked the car underneath the building in the cool car park and walked up the stairs to find our home for the week.

The apartment was on the second floor and consisted of two levels.  The first level has a double bedroom, twin bedroom, shower/toilet room, kitchen and living area with small balcony, plus a large terrace with dining table, barbecue and some children’s toys.  The upper level has a large terrace with water hose (small paddling pool on the lower terrace which could be filled up here) and several sun loungers to relax on.

From the upper terrace you can see across the roof tops to the sea and on windy days you can watch the kite surfers out on the ocean.  The pale blue walls are also pretty instagramable in my opinion!

It’s a great area to let the kids run around on or play with toys, whilst the adults relax in the sun.

The bedrooms are all comfortable with plenty of space to store clothes and clean bed sheets.  The only issue we had with the beds is that there wasn’t a bed guard that I could use on my youngest’s bed.  We very rarely find these anywhere we visit, but it’s always useful for those children who have a tendency to keep rolling until they fall out of bed!  I never needed one for my eldest, he stays pretty still, but the 5 year old.  Well, he’s a different kettle of fish!!

Our own bedroom had a comfy double bed and patio style doors that open onto a small balcony where we could get a good view down to the swimming pool and across to the ocean.

The living area and kitchen are small, but perfectly workable when you can usually use the large dining table out on the lower terrace.  There is a television, sofa and coffee table to relax at in the living room and a small breakfast bar that the boys enjoyed sitting at for their breakfast of cereal or toast.

In the kitchen there are all the appliances you could need, plus plenty of crockery and cutlery, a microwave, oven with hob and fridge freezer.  The apartment is only a 10 minute walk from the local Spar, which has a reasonable selection of basic food.  There are larger cheaper supermarkets around elsewhere, including HiperDino and Lidl’s.

We spent the evening in the living area, reading stories to the children and helping them with the scrapbooks they were making about the trip.  Once they were in bed we could sit and relax as it was a bit too cold to be out on the terrace on a March evening.  I’m sure later in the year you could stay outside a lot longer than we could.

The little balcony outside the living area has a small table and 2 chairs which are great to catch a little bit of time for quiet contemplation or to read a book.

You can also see over to the swimming pool from the balcony, so it’s great to keep an eye on the other half and kids when you’re having a rest or cooking dinner back at the apartment!

The swimming pool isn’t heated, so although we did manage to enjoy playing in the pool in the afternoon, we couldn’t stay in the water as long as normal.  In the warmer summer months it would be ideal to cool off in the sweltering heat!

To access the pool you need to use the fob that you are given with the keys.  With the access to the property gated and keys required for entry into the complex, swimming pool and then apartment’s, it feels very safe indeed.

As you can see, the children had a great time in the pool and weren’t too concerned about the cool temperature of the water!  Perhaps they spent more time running and jumping into the pool so they were a lot warmer than us?!

As I mentioned earlier the apartment complex is very close to the beach.  You need to only cross one road and the beautiful black sand beach is right in front of you.  The volcanic island has many beaches, a few are golden sand (imported from the Sahara desert), but there are plenty of beautiful black sand beaches formed from volcanic basaltic rock.

It’s quite windy on the beaches on Tenerife, but still plenty of fun to have playing in the ocean and racing around the beach.  At Puertito de Guimar there are breakwater barriers that calm the sea down a little, allowing you to play in the ocean without worrying too much about large waves.

Whilst staying in Tenerife we spent our time visiting some of the major geographical landmarks including the famous volcano Mt Teide and Anaga laurel forest.  Mt Teide deserves a whole day to travel up the mountainside in the changing environment, with spectacular views toward the volcano.  Book a cable car or walk up to the viewing areas high up the volcano and look out over the rest of Tenerife from it’s highest point.

It’s also worth a visit to Siam Park, a fantastic water park for all the family, we had a brilliant time there together!  You can also find more educational places to get children interested in their surroundings, including a tour of aloe and banana plantations, visiting the market in Santa Cruz and a brilliant volcano and natural history museum in Santa Cruz.

We had a fantastic time in Tenerife and especially loved having an apartment that felt like home for the week.  Muchosol certainly came up trumps with a brilliant and well organised trip.  The staff in Tenerife checked up on us via email several times to ensure we were happy with everything during our stay and answer any further questions we had about Tenerife.  Good customer service is certainly something that makes me want to use a company again and again.
