Disclosure: This is a paid post with a Very Back To School campaign
It that time of year! The schooled kids are all off back to school and the home educated children are enjoying the peace and quiet of museums, castles and play parks again! Don’t get me wrong, they love playing with school kids too, but it can get so busy compared to term time!
When the school kids go back we like to have a not back to school picnic. It’s a great day for home educated kids to all meet up, play and chat about their summer. A fun day for all! So the kids were excited to receive this awesome box of not back to school goodies from Very! A good start for the new term.

Not Back To School Clothing
Just because the kids don’t attend school, doesn’t mean they don’t need new clothes for the term. Because we are out A LOT (we rarely spend a whole day at home!) they quite quickly get through their outdoor clothing. Here are the items that are very useful for us for the new non-school year!
Jackets
We are outside a lot, whether it’s meeting up with other home educators at the park or walking around castles. More often than not we will spend a large percentage of the week outside.
So of course the kids need some good jackets to keep them warm and dry. I find the autumn months hardest, it’s often too dry for waterproof jackets, but the wind can be cold. Having a cosy jacket to keep the wind off really does help when you are on a chilly autumnal playground.

Littlest chose an orange Adidas puffer style jacket. It’s cosy and keeps light rain off, but also can stuff easily into his bag when not being used. I also know he will be easy to spot with the bright orange colour of the jacket, a very important factor for younger kids!
Our eldest went for the ombre purple to black Ellesse puffer style jacket. Again it’s cosy and will be fine in light showers. He can squash it up and fit it in his bag very easily too. Although the colour is not so bright it is distinct enough to distinguish him from other kids at a busy playpark.
Tough Shoes
Trainers do not last long in our house, the kids quickly wear out the toes and soles. If we’re not outside meeting people or going on walks and visiting interesting places, the kids are outside playing with friends or in the garden. So they really are tough on their footwear, we need hard wearing shoes for everyday wear.

They don’t need to wear the black school shoes, but we thought the eldest could try some out this year. They go well with his kilt and are useful when trying to be smart! The black Kickers Fragma shoes are also quite tough wearing compared to trainers. So they are great for running around and getting scuffed when kids are playing!

The youngest chose Kickers too, but red Kickers boots. They have a zip fastening on the side, which makes them easier to put on. They also look quite cool with his leggings! I imagine it will take a little time to wear the shoes in, but they are good for children who like to run around a lot and keep feet dry in wet weather.
Bags
School bags are definitely not required here. But the kids do need a bag that is big enough for a bottle of water, lunch or snacks and a few other items. In the summer they have sunglasses and sun hats, but in the winter they have warm hats and gloves! I find it easier that they carry these things themselves.
They already have larger bags we use for day trips, so this time they chose smaller bags for shorter trips. Littlest particularly likes this rainbow coloured backpack from Accessorize. It’s perfect for fitting in a few snacks and a bottle of water, plus some dressing up items! His main reason for choosing this bag was definitely the bright and colourful style.
The eldest went for a slightly bigger, but still small rucksack. It is a blue Adidas and Disney outdoor backpack. It fits in his lunch and water bottle, plus a few other things. A good size for half days out together.
