Graphic Novels and Comic Books For Primary School Aged Kids
Here are a few graphic novels for kids and comic books for kids that we or friends have recommended. Let me know if you have others that your kids enjoy too!
Wings of Fire
The Wings of Fire is a Scholastic fantasy kids graphic novel about several dragon hatchlings. The dragons fulfil prophecies and in the process stop war. It’s basically a series of books that are anti-war and do attempt some darker themes such as murder and genocide between the dragons. However, this is all done in a manner that children can understand without being scared.
The graphics are detailed and the kids particularly enjoy the different colours and magical gifts that the dragons have.
Corpse Talks
Corpse Talks are brilliant for kids who like history or to get your children interested in history! Basically the author, Adam Murphy, acts as the interviewer and digs up famous people from the past to ask them why they were famous!
The comic illustrations show the famous people being interviewed by Adam and also snippets from their life. Their lives are condensed into the comic strips and are both humorous and easy to follow. Perfect for kids to learn more about history in a fun way.
Bunny Vs Monkey
Beginning as a comic strip in the Phoenix magazine, Bunny Vs Monkey is a funny comic for kids. Children will giggle away at the cartoon images and silly language. It’s suggested age is 8+, but younger kids will probably enjoy it too!
Each book in the series is different, so don’t need to be read in any particular order. Instead kids can just enjoy the hilarious adventures of bunny and monkey together.
Science Comics For Kids
The Science Comics series currently has 18 books available, with more to be published. They are fun cartoons that introduce kids to different topics from science. From sharks and coral reefs to flying machines and volcanoes. They are brilliant to get kids interested in STEM subjects in a really fun way.

Dog Man Series
The Dog Man series is one of the first graphic novels my eldest read. He then went on to read the whole series to his little brother, who also adores them! They find the books hilarious and will sit there giggling whilst reading together!
Dog Man is actually a policeman who protects the city with help from his friends. He gains a sidekick in Cat Kid and together they try to stop Dog Man’s arch enemy. Cat Kid also has his own book too!
Narwhal and Jelly
The Narwhal and Jelly books are for really early readers (ages 5+) with few words to each page. Perfect for young readers to giggle with silly antics between the happy and excitable Narwhal and the no-nonsense jellyfish called Jelly.
The pair explore the ocean together with the power of their imagination and friendship. A great start to kids comic books for early readers.
Looshkin
Looshkin is the maddest cat in the world. The books are full of his crazy and fun adventures where he manages to such mad things like flooding the house, crashing a train into the living room and opening a portal to another dimension in your loft!
Definitely one for adventurous and cat loving children!
