Pompeii, Naples
Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city that was buried in ash and volcanic rock from a volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. It was preserved for years under the ash, with voids created by the decaying of organic material. These voids included human remains. When archaeologists poured plaster into the void to retain the shape of the space it showed the shape of the human that lay there. It’s a unique perspective on the shape of the people and their clothing under the ash. These plaster casts are on display within the Pompeii complex. Although there is a lot more to look at aside the human tragedy.
Ancient Pompeii
Much of the city has now been excavated, although there are always areas that require further investigation with modern technology. Some of the more interesting features include a variety of floor mosaics in richer houses and paintings in a Pompeii brothel! The latter was a sort of ‘menu’ of different positions available! The children will be more interested in the giant stepping stones across the cobbled roads where sewage ran freely. Or the ruts from cart wheels on the cobble stones. There are also temples and the Roman Forum, alongside small shop bedsits and bakers. It’s an interesting look into life in 70’s AD!
Family Tour of Pompeii
We had a 2 hour family tour around the oldest part of Pompeii, nearest the entrance. The 2 hours was plenty of time for the children. It is definitely a lot of walking and even in early summer it’s hot! Original Travel arranged for us to be picked up at the Naples cruise port where our Cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas, had docked. They were there on time and quickly drove us out of the city. Directly to the entrance at Pompeii where our guide met us.
Whilst many other people were in large tour groups with headphones to listen to the guide, we had our own private tour. It was much better for us as the tour was tailored to our needs. So we quickly passed through the gates and away from tour group chaos. The guide was fantastic at telling us all the little details in each building. He clearly knew his history, although he did admit it wasn’t the subject he was trained in.
Is a Family Tour of Pompeii Worth it?
Yes! A private family tour of Pompeii was completely worth it. We could visit areas away from larger tour groups, have our questions answered quickly and see the interesting areas without peering over other people’s shoulders.
It was a much better experience for us as a family. Everything from the private transfer in an air conditioned car to Pompeii and the easy walking tour around the site, before being transferred back to the cruise ship. It was smooth and welcoming and completely different to other tours we’ve tried elsewhere. I highly recommend if you’re heading to Pompeii.
