Egyptian Mummies Unwrapped Book
The book Mummies Unwrapped written by Tom Froese and published by Nosy Crow does what it says in the title! It is a book all about Egyptian Mummies, how they were made, why and how they were discovered.
There are 11 chapters explaining everything in child-friendly detail. From what happened to the organs, to the funeral and who were the most famous mummies. The book describes in grisly detail of what was used to remove the organs and stuff the body. As well as who the gods were that accept the mummy into the afterlife. Very interesting and informative, written in a way children can understand.
The children were particularly interested in reading about what animals were mummified along with the Egyptians! From cats to baboons and even made up animals or fake animal mummies made of sticks and mud. Very strange and perhaps didn’t help their relatives in the afterlife!
Who Is Mummies Unwrapped For?
Any child who has an interest in history or specifically Egyptians will enjoy this book. If your child is working on an Egyptian project then they will find this particularly useful. The illustrations are great at showing how Egyptian’s created mummies without it being too gory! Even the gruesome task of pulling the brain out through the nose doesn’t look too bad in this book!
Although we’ve read a lot about Egyptology over the years of home education, I still found new facts in this book. For example sometimes the embalmers would create body parts out of wood or linen when bits were missing!! It must have been quite a creative process for those involved in embalming the mummy!
What Age Is Mummies Unwrapped For?
The book is aimed ay 7-10 year olds. However, I’m sure younger readers or older readers will also find it an interesting read.
Younger readers may need the book to be read to them. Older readers may like to use it as a base to begin research into specific topics related to Egyptian mummies.
