Why a Food Tour With Kids?
Tours with kids can be difficult, they don’t always like walking far. But mix a tour with food and they’re going to have an amazing time! Getting kids to try new things isn’t always easy, but when there’s no expectation to eat the whole thing, then you will easily find kids tucking in to new and exciting things.

Rome Family Food Tour With Original Travel
Whilst we were in Rome, Original Travel organised a family food tour for us. We met just outside the busy tourist centre near the Pyramid. The Pyramid is a giant pyramid tomb that was eventually built into the walls of the city!
Our tour guide, Eugene, was very knowledgable about Rome’s history as well as food. So whilst we walked round to the market place he also showed us a hill made entirely of broken pottery, amphora’s, discarded during the Roman period! We saw various sections where there was no plants growing and pottery was visible.

Our first stop was at the food market. It used to be based outdoors in a local square, but is now an indoor market place. Inside were many different small shops and stalls selling a large variety of different items. From fruit and veg stalls to leather bags and meat!
The eldest and I tried a local Roman delicacy, Suppli. Suppli are fried rice balls with mozzarella inside. They were very tasty and definitely and easy snack to have whilst wandering around.

The fruit and vegetable stalls were my favourite. They are always so colourful with such a variety of different produce. Some stalls even had foraged leaves as part of their produce. Eugene bought us some flat looking peaches to try. A local variety of peaches which are very sweet, affectionately known by locals as Saturn or Donut peaches (for obvious reasons!).
Another Rome speciality are fried zucchini flowers. I really enjoyed them, although the kids were not quite so sure. Littlest was very hungry at this point as he hadn’t tried the suppli, so I recommend bringing a couple of snacks if you have a child who is a bit fussier with food! My eldest was happy to try everything though!

Our final stop was at the oldest patisserie in the area. Eugene said it was the oldest in Rome, but I’m not sure if that is necessarily true! The kids and I chose a dessert each. They liked the look of the chocolate cream ones, and were eaten before I managed a photo! I had a small version of theirs and a tiny tart with patisserie cream and peach. All were delicious!

Fortunately there are many water fountains around Rome to get drinking water and clean up mucky kids fingers!
Our Verdict!
Our tour guide was very knowledgable and we had a great time chatting about history and food. Although the tour wasn’t geared towards children my eldest still really enjoyed all the food. The 8 year old was a little grumpy as he was hungry, so I’d perhaps recommend taking a few snacks for kids in case they didn’t like the food on offer.
There wasn’t a lot of walking so it was definitely an easy tour. Plenty of stops to sit down and rest or eat. Eugene was also great at making sure we got to our next destination easily by finding us the correct bus stop and bus. Very helpful!
