The weekly podcast of Wow In The World is the perfect podcast for kids who love silly stuff and a little bit of science. It’s surprising what science ideas they manage to explain in a kids friendly way, plus the kids will just enjoy all the hilarity that Mindy and her gang bring. This is one of the favourite podcasts that our kids listen to and there are years worth of free episodes to catch up on if you haven’t listened to it yet!
Story Pirates
The storytelling podcast, Story pirates, relies on kids sending in their own stories. Then the story pirates take these stories and make them into comedy sketches and songs. They have such a variety of stories that it will keep the kids entertained for hours! They can even send in their own story if they want!
Earth Rangers
Animal loving kids will really enjoy the Earth Rangers podcast. The earlier episodes are mostly in a fun quiz and fact giving show, whereas more recent ones have been created into a story about a lost conservationist. They are now putting together a series of Earth Rangers podcasts visiting the National Parks around the USA and Canada. We’ve learnt so much about animals from all over the world. Who, When, Wow
The original Who, When, Wow episodes are focussed on the presenter chatting to the ghosts of famous people who maybe aren’t remembered as well as they should be. These are often people who are black or women, as they were often written out of history. The second season of recent episodes on Who, When, Wow has changed slightly to be a storyline where the main character ‘Carly Q’ goes back in time in a time travelling elevator to try and solve ‘time sealed’ mysteries. So more about actual events than a single person. Both seasons are really engaging and the kids love the series!
Mysteries of Science
The UK podcast, Mysteries of Science comes from the people who brought you The Week Junior Science and Nature magazine. It’s a great factual podcast about science mysteries and trying to work out why things happen, from why we laugh to UFO’s and Quantum Weirdness! It’s a great way for curious kids to really enjoy science learning.
Greeking Out
National Geographic Kids brings us Greeking Out podcast. This is the absolute favourite podcast of my children and we listen to it over and over again. It’s also where their love of history has come from, particularly Greek Mythology. Greeking Out is mostly about Greek mythology, with several episodes dedicated to the Odyssey. However, they also cover parts of Norse mythology, Roman mythology and even Mesopotamian and Maya mythology. It’s created in such a fun way that the entire family will be enraptured on the long drive.
Tumble
Another science podcast for kids – Tumble, you get to join Marshall and Lindsay on a variety of adventures inspired by kids questions. In some of the podcast episodes (but not all!) they are led by children’s questions to investigate different science topics. However, others are led by Lindsay and Marshall themselves. It’s an excellent podcast to get big science topics across to kids in an easy to understand way. Topics can be anything from Hearing the Stars to the Science of Butts!
Flip and Mozi’s How To be An Earthling
Younger children will absolutely love Flip and Mozi’s How To Be An Earthling. Flip and Mozi are aliens who crashed into an asteroid and are now stranded orbiting earth in their space ship. They have their own travel podcast and often use the little space pod to travel down to earth, where they chat and sing with various different animals. It’s a lovely series that animal lovers will enjoy, but so will those kids who just love silliness! Plus they will learn about different animals along the way.
Super Great Kids Stories
This is a fun story podcast for younger kids. They will love listening to all the brilliant stories told by esteemed story tellers from around the world. It’s perfect for a long road trip, when the kids can listen to stories about mythical creatures or those from folklore in various countries. Great stories include a variety of the Anansi tales, Baba Yaga tales and traditional tales.
Purple Rocket Podcast
This has to be in our list of the best podcasts for family road trips! There are various series on the Purple Rocket podcast, some more aimed at older children, such as the Winglings Under the Willow tree. Whereas the Knights of Spatula are more suited to a younger audience and Grandpa’s Globe will be a favourite of all the family. They are told in such an awesome way that everyone will love listening.
The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel
The unexplainable disappearance of Mars Patel is a Wondery podcast that comes highly recommended. It’s a mystery series performed by children for children, aimed at ages 8-12 years old.
Homeschool History
This is a good podcast, however Homeschool history has a limited number of episodes as it was created during the 2020 lockdown. No new episodes have been added since. If you love history then this has fantastic family-friendly podcasts about characters and places such as Mary Seaacole, the Great Fire of London and Pompeii.
History Storytime
This is a lovely history storytime series for your next family road trip. Told by two sisters from the UK with a little help from their dad. Their last episode was back in 2022, so there may not be any new episodes, but there’s over a 100 to catch up on if you want to try it. Maybe they’ll come back and do more episodes again, but at this point it’s just what’s there. Anyway, the podcast is told in a really fun way which will be loved by all family members. There’s everything from the history of Harriet Tubman or the Siege of Vienna to Captain Cook. Definitely one of our favourite history podcasts.
Brains On
Another awesome science podcasts, created by American public media. Every week on Brains on there are fun episodes around silly questions such as ‘Do dogs know they are dogs?’ Or ‘How much can your brain hold?’ Definitely a fun one for both young and older kids.
Circle Round
Circle Round is a lovely story podcast written by parents for children of all ages. They carefully select stories from folklore around the world and adapt them into their own stories that everyone will love to listen to!
Who Smarted
Who Smarted is an educational podcast developed to be a funny and amazing way to help kids learn about history and science. With wacky stories for curious kids, including everything from ‘Do rabbits eat their own poop?’ to ‘Was March once the first month?’. There is definitely a lot of interesting topics in their episodes, with over 400 episodes to listen to!
Whose Amazing Life
This is literally a podcast where you step into the life of someone amazing and find out all about what makes them amazing! From the Amazing Life
of an explorer to the genius to the all-star, you can step into the shoes of those amazing people to see why their lives are so great.
The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian
This is a science fiction story about 8 year old Finn Caspian and his friends. They are an explorers troop out in space solving mysteries along the way. There are now over 12 seasons of the podcast, so make sure you start at episode 1! A great podcast for travel tales and perfect for a long trip!
Adventures of Cairo
Another one of the fiction podcasts is Adventures of Cairo. Cairo is a 7 year old American boy who loves exploring and playing with his friends. This is a great story podcast that helps children learn about kindness, safety, family and more, through listening to Cairo’s adventures in the world.
Fun Kids Science Weekly
Another awesome science podcast for kids. The Fun Kids Science Weekly podcast is hosted by Dan with the occasional special guest. Dan explores topics such as ‘Can you eat 5000 year old cheese?’ to ‘Jupiter’s Icy Moons and How We’re Going To Explore them!’. There’s definitely a lot of great ideas in this podcast!
