Accidentally arriving at the back door of Sibu Lodge, I was immediately taken aback by the beautifully laid out ‘neighbourhoods’. Following a pretty meandering path through the hotel complex I arrived at reception to be greeted by a welcoming receptionist.
It was clear at reception where we should have parked the car, but sometimes sat nav gets the exact location wrong! Fortunately it only took 2 minutes to move the car to the front of the hotel building, where there are several parking space. Surprisingly we were one of only a handful of residents that had a hire car, so it was easy to find a parking space.

Stunning Sibu Lodge
The entrance to the hotel is rather beautiful with its pretty plants, welcoming lounge bar and various seating options. I also noticed that accessibility had been considered, with a wheelchair lift beside the stairs to the accommodation area.
Outside each of the rooms are a private seating area for the guests. However, further out into the open spaces there are plenty of other social areas, stone seating areas set in beds of succulents and flowers. A great way to encourage guests to chat together or even meet guides to discuss the days adventures.
Our family room was just above reception, which I was initially concerned about. Being near the main reception area can often mean there is a lot of noise, keeping the kids awake in the evening. Fortunately this wasn’t a problem, we could easily shut the glass windows in the hall, cutting off any sound disruption from below.
We were please to find that our family room had 3 beds for our family of 4. Most of Costa Rica seem to offer two double beds for 4 persons, so it was nice to not to have to share with the kids. We do have one particularly wriggly child and another who wakes early. A good spacious room there is a mini fridge, table and chairs, plus a large en-suite shower room. Perfect for relaxing in after a full day of adventures.
Bitzu Restaurant
Walk the winding path through the pretty flowerbeds until you reach the back of the hotel complex. Here you will find Sibu Lodge’s restaurant, Bitzu. The restaurant is small and staff are very attentive, stunning sculptures and art work adorn the walls. Choose between the outdoor seating or indoors. You won’t be disappointed with the food options, all the meals we tried on the menu were delicious. You can also ask for a children’s menu, which was perfect for our fussy 10 year old. Prices are similar to other restaurants in Costa Rica (which can be a little more expensive than UK restaurant prices).
Those staying at the hotel receive a complimentary breakfast each morning throughout their stay. We were handed a menu each to choose a meal, although there are also a range of continental breakfast options in the buffet. Obviously the children chose pancakes for breakfast each day. I personally preferred the Gallo Pinto, which is a typical Costa Rican breakfast of rice and beans, with a small corn tortilla and plantain.
As the restaurant only has a few tables available, then I’d recommend booking for dinner. Especially if you are a group of 4 or more, most tables are for 2 people, so you may need to wait if it’s busy. We never needed to book for breakfast, but we were usually there for opening
Birthday Celebration at Sibu Lodge
My husband celebrated his 40th birthday whilst we were at Sibu Lodge. A milestone birthday, I wanted it to be special for him, even though we were miles from home. Sibu Lodge definitely came through with a lovely surprise. Returning from a morning excursion to Monteverde cloud forest we found a wonderful display of balloons and a card for my husband. A little later there was a knock at the door and a gorgeous chocolate cake was delivered by smiling member of staff.
The cake was absolutely delicious and certainly a lovely addition to my husbands birthday celebrations.
Other Services Offered By Sibu Lodge
Sibu Lodge offers a wide range of services, including the use of their sister hotel’s (Poco a Poco) pool. We took full advantage of this on one afternoon, to let the kids get out some energy! The pool is undercover, but it is cold! So please be aware that it might be a bit chilly if it’s a dull day in the rainy season. It didn’t bother us and we had a great time both in the pool and the heated jacuzzi beside it. There is also a bar right beside the pool, there are even stools built into the pool to swim up to the bar!
It’s also possible to book a massage or wellness treatment at the Naroa Spa, located at Poco a Poco. They have a variety of treatments available, just ask at reception for details.
It’s also possible to book your excursions through the hotel, just ask at reception for assistance. Most people choose to visit Monteverde cloud forest on a guided tour, they have some of the best wildlife viewing in the area.
And if you have run out of clean clothes then ask to use the hotels laundry. They are excellent and you’ll be pleased to receive clean clothing to wear again!
Things To Do In Monteverde
Sibu Lodge is located in the town of Monteverde, known for its luscious cloud forest. We witnessed the particularly interesting phenomenon when the cloud rolled into Monteverde on our first day. The entire town covered by a low mist for a few minutes, before rolling out again!
Everyday we would wake up to a cacophony of birds calling out, which was always a delight to hear. On our guided tour into Monteverde cloud forest we were delighted that we actually saw a Quetzal calling to its mate high in the canopy. There were capuchins calling and leaping from tree to tree, plus highly camouflaged stick insects, a nesting pair of Toucanettes and more hummingbirds than we could count. Certainly an amazing place for wildife!
Other things to do in the area include zip lining at either Treetopia or Selvatura Park, climbing a Ficus tree or walking across high suspension bridges. There are lots of awesome tours, although you can also book your own entrance to parks such as CuriCancha and explore at your own pace.
