A is currently 21 months old, well and truly a toddler and still most definitely breastfeeding.
He has been feeling a bit under the weather this week and so feeding a bit more than normal. Which is fair enough given he had a temperature of over 39 degrees the other night, wasn’t eating and needed fluids.
However, he does seem to like staying attached even when he’s asleep, so this is my step-by-step guide to unlatching a toddler.
Step One. Gently lift his top lip and try to release nipple. This needs to be done both gently and quickly before he realises my intentions and clamps down. Of course there is also the possibility of trying to move to quickly whilst he clamps down, then there’s the cartoon stretchy nipple and you can imagine the ‘twang’ sound!
Step Two. You might think that you’re now free to leave, but no! More often than not the ominous ‘me’ sound is uttered by little A and the whole process of feeding begins again.
Step Three. Manage to unlatch again, but little then waves his arms around until he grabs hold of flesh and re-latches again.
Step Four. Wait until he’s still again, unlatch and jump out of bed with ninja skills. Open and close bedroom door very quietly, wait a second at the door to check he’s not woken up and your free!
Of course, as he’s been feeling under weather this will last approximate 10 minutes and we’re back to square one again!!
I’m sure we’ll back to normal again soon. Do you have similar issues with unlatching your little ones?
