Green People UK
Green People is a UK organic skincare brand. Founded by a mother wishing to find products that were suitable for her baby’s sensitive skin, Green People is now almost 30 years old. Many products that are considered organic only have a small percentage of natural ingredients, the rest made up of synthetic chemicals. However, Green People have developed a wide variety of ranges over the years that have a much higher percentage of organic ingredients. This makes them particularly suitable for sensitive skin.
We tested the Green People sun cream and aftersun ranges. Read our review of them below.
Children’s Organic Suncream and Aftersun
The children’s sun cream and aftersun from Green people is not only organic, but the bottle is made from sugar cane plastic! I had to actually look up how plastic is made from sugar cane, it’s completely new to me! It’s basically a process that crushes the sugar cane to make a green plant-based ethanol (alcohol). This is then used in the same way as conventional polyethylene oils to create plastic. It can also be fully recycled with normal plastics when finished too.
Children’s Scent Free Sun Cream SPF30
However, it’s not the packaging that we were really interested in (although I love a smaller carbon footprint!) but the product itself. The kids are outside a lot and often during the summer we’re playing in the sea around Scotland or mainland Europe. I need to make sure they are fully protected from the sun’s rays, but able to still enjoy themselves. As I am usually the one making sure they are completely covered it needs to be friendly to sensitive skin too.
When spread on the skin you only need a small amount to cover a large area. It rubs into the skin nicely, without any greasy marks. The high SPF 30 sun cream was great for the kids, protecting them even when they chose to wade and then swim in the sea.
The Green People children’s sun cream is formulated with 61% organic ingredients and has moisturising cocoa and shea butter to nourish the skin. Good to hear that it has a high percentage of organic ingredients!
Another excellent feature of the cream is that it’s free from Oxybenzone & Octinoxate. This means it’s ocean friendly, not sending toxic chemicals into the ocean that can damage ecosystems.
Children’s Organic Lotion & Aftersun
The Green people organic children’s aftersun is also a soothing lotion. It’s perfect for soothing dry and irritated skin, or any areas that may have had a little too much sun.
This lotion is also suitable for sensitive skin, which is fantastic for me applying it as well as the kids. Plus it actually consists of 92% certified organic ingredients, which is fantastic. I’d much rather use organic and natural ingredients on my children’s skin rather than synthetically derived products.
Both children had a little light sunburn at the top of their sleeves. So I applied the after sun lotion to each of them. Both felt it was soothing and the next day the sunburn had disappeared. It’s definitely a good product for kids and smells quite nice too!
Adult’s Organic Sun Cream and Aftersun
I tested out the adult version of Green People organic sun cream and aftersun. The bottles are made of the same plant based packaging derived from sugar cane, the same as the children’s bottles. This lowers the carbon footprint of the products and is obviously much better for the environment.
Green People Scent-free Sensitive Sun Cream
I used the high SPF30 scent free sun cream as I burn very easily. I always need to make sure I have the highest SPF that I can find! This sun cream has 59.5% certified organic ingredients, which is a little lower than the kids version, but still a lot higher than other brands.
The sun cream is suitable for sensitive skin, which is true, it didn’t affect my eczema or make me itchy like others I’ve previously tried. It also rubs in nicely, with no greasy skin.
The sun cream is water repellent and ocean-friendly. So I could enjoy a dip in the sea without worrying about getting burnt or damaging the environment.
Moisturising Aftersun With Insect Repellent
The aftersun that I used was actually also a natural insect repellent. Which does make sense, as often insects are out in the cooler evenings and that’s when you have applied the aftersun. The natural insect repellent works against midges and ticks amongst others and lasts for up to 4 hours. Definitely a useful product here in Scotland!
Although I wasn’t sunburnt after being outside, I still used the aftersun to moisturise and soothe my skin. It does get dried out easily in the sun. I especially loved the aloe vera and peppermint scent, it certainly smelt delicious! With 85% certified organic ingredients it’s also great for your skin, with fewer synthetic ingredients.
What Does Ocean Friendly Mean?
Ocean-friendly refers to the fact that the sun cream is free from Oxybenzone & Octinoxate chemicals. These are known to to affect our ocean ecosystems with a particular emphasis on coral reels. They inhibit the growth of baby corals and even lead to coral bleaching. As our sun cream can come off in the water it’s important we choose sun cream that doesn’t have harmful chemicals.
