A family run business, Lanzarote Retreats was founded in 2007 and now has 30 different sustainable places to stay across Lanzarote. Lanzarote Retreats tries to incorporate eco-friendly and sustainable aspects into all of their accommodations. From solar power to desalination plants and reusing water in the gardens, it’s great to see how we can holiday in a more environmentally friendly way.

You can find various villas and cottages from Lanzarote Retreats in Cost Teguise, Arecife, Puerto del Carmen and in the North Arrieta and Puerto Mujeres. But the most unique location has to be Finca de Arrieta.

Eco Finca de Arrieta

Finca de Arrieta is a little eco-friendly village of yurts and cottages for guests to stay in. Arriving in the finca with it’s traditional lava rock built walls, white painted structures, beautiful cacti and farm animals, you’ll find it such a calming and serene place to stay.

The different yurts and cottages are all centred around the swimming pool and communal areas. It’s perfect for kids to make friends in the pool or kids playground. There’s a love sense of community and friendliness throughout the finca. Staff are lovely and happy to help with any requests, which it makes it such a laid back and easy holiday.

Originally most resorts and villas are located in the 3 popular touristy towns. Not many people stay further North in Lanzarote . It was a bit of a brave step for the founders of Lanzarote Retreats to try building Finca de Arrieta in a less well known area. Yet what they’ve done has opened up an area in the North of Lanzarote to show that there is so much more to Lanzarote than the resort towns.

Eco Credentials

Eco Finca de Arrieta was originally an old farmstead, converted into a sustainable holiday village. The swimming pool was once the water tank and the eco tower was originally a windmill, all the areas of the farm that could be incorporated into the design were included. I love that reuse of old buildings an areas, rather than just concreting over the whole place!

Walk into the playground area and you will find lots of different play equipment that has been upcycled for use by children visiting in the finca. The large boat and trampoline certainly being favourites. Although the kids also had great fun playing in the sand of the football/volleyball court!

Electricity arrives in the finca via solar power panels, which are located right next to the animal enclosures. All leftover vegetables and bread can be fed to the animals, which are more than happy to eat carrots tops, peelings and even stale bread for the donkeys!

Fresh eggs can be collected from the chickens and everyone is encouraged to use waste water to water the plants in the finca. This way the precious water isn’t wasted and plants can grow. Water is definitely a precious resource in the finca, although they do have their own desalination plant.

Community

The community in the finca is lovely. There were both families and couples staying when we visited, with everyone being very friendly. At the pool and playground it’s easy for the kids to make friends and usually a few adults around to chat to as well.

The finca also organises various activities throughout the weeks. When we were there Monday night was paella night, where you could watch a paella demonstration with other families. Then of course eat the paella for dinner! Paella is one of my favourite dishes, so tasty!

You can also sign up to other organised activities including yoga, dancing and pilates. There are sign up sheets in the communal area to sign up for all activities. You can also visit the Lanzarote Retreats reception if you need any help and organise different excursions.

Child Friendly

One of my favourite things about Finca de Arrieta is that it’s so child-friendly. The kids loved being able to help themselves to a drink from the honesty fridge by the pool. You just write on your sheet hanging up beside it what you’ve taken. There’s an honesty shop too where you can take and pay for the different types of food available as well as refilling water. Our youngest took it upon himself to refill the water every day or so! Perfect for given him a little more independence.

The staff are all very friendly and love chatting to the kids. Although I think the kids favourite areas were the pool and the little park to play in. There are various different things to play on, but the trampoline and sandy area were certainly favourites of our two.

As cars are to be parked around the perimeter it’s safe for the kids to run along and explore the paths together away from the dangers of vehicles.

Accommodation

There’s a great variety of accommodation in the Eco Finca de Arrieta. We stayed in the lodge, which has 1 bedroom, a double sofa bed, kitchen, toilet/shower and living area. Outside is a small patio area with day bed, sun loungers and table and chairs. Perfect for eating outside each day!

There are also several yurts, cottages and even a tower to stay in! I think it would be lovely to stay in a yurt, they look rather amazing! All the different accommodations have their own kitchen and toilet. Plus a lovely area to relax with either hammocks or day beds and tables for eating at.

Even in the winter it was still a beautiful temperature and so we ate outside every evening! In the summer you might want to put up the umbrella to get a little more shade from the sun. But it’s definitely lovely to have some outdoor space to relax in beside your accommodation.

All the accommodation on the site are close together and easily accessible to the communal areas. It’s not spread out and this makes it easy to access all the areas, even for very young children. It’s also only a 5 minute walk to the beach at Arrieta, which is perfect for body boarding, surfing or just relaxing!
