5 Last Minute Autumn Holiday Destinations

last minute holidays

It’s autumn already and although I’m missing the warmer weather and sun, I do love the change in colours and the autumn layers.  If we had a fire I would be loving the idea of settling down beside it in the evening.  But instead of settling for the UK this autumn, why not enjoy the season a bit further abroad?

Canadian Fall

Canada’s fall is almost legendary and I know my husband would love to visit Canada one Autumn to discover its delights.  Of course there are plenty of other attractions still open throughout the summer months, but the scenery might just steal the show!

Where To Stay

The Eastern side of Canada, Quebec and Ontario are probably the best locations if your main reason to visit is to see the fall foliage.

Must See

The fall foliage is stunning, but there is more than one way to see it.  You can try a rail journey from Toronto – Vancouver or the Niagara parkway which follows the winding Niagara River or hike around Prince Edward Island.

Best Time To Go

October – November is the best time to see the most spectacular display of fall foliage.

Oktoberfest

september munich

From 16th September to 3rd October in Munich you can test some awesome beers at Oktoberfest.   Kids are welcome too, there are plenty of fairground rides for them to enjoy and they are allowed in beer tents with parents present.

Where To Stay

Hotels are booked up quickly so you will need to get in quick to book accommodation.  If you haven’t booked far in advance, try some of the hotels a bit further away from the festival, be prepared to pay a bit more if you haven’t booked in advance.

Must See

Clearly the beer tents are a must see and lots of drinking is likely to be on the cards for the adults.  But for families there is likely to be more of fairground ride theme to Oktoberfest, so take the kids, enjoy the beer and the rides!

Best Time To Go

During the week is quieter than weekends, however it’s still best to reserve a table in the beer tents to guarantee seats.

Japan

During autumn the Japanese celebrate the change in the leaf colours and the falling of the leaves.  It’s  quite a popular time for both locals and tourists to travel to the forests of Japan and hike along trails to see the leaves and enjoy the cooler air.

Where To Stay

Check the Japan Foliage Forecast to see where is the best place to see the leaf fall when you are visiting.  The island of Hokkaido is the first area to experience Autumn and has some stunning scenery.

Must See

Hike in the mountains to see the foliage, but don’t forget to visit some of Japan’s other beautiful attractions including castles, shrines and villages.  There are also many autumn festivals dotted around the country, including The Takayama Autumn Festival and Sapporo Autumn Fest.

Best Time To Go

October – December, dependant on the region you are visiting.

Malta

If you are looking for somewhere warmer to visit in the autumn, perhaps swimming or snorkelling in the 24 ºC weather in Malta?  The island will be a lot quieter than the summer and cool enough to enjoy the sites without needing to seek shade throughout the day.

Where To Stay

Valletta, St Julian’s and Mellieha are all great places to stay with plenty of amenities.

Must See

Aside enjoying the sun you should also visit some of the sites on Malta.  Walk along the fortification wall at Valletta, take a boat trip, get lost in Mdina and visit the prehistoric Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (book well in advance for this!).

Best Time To Go

Late September – October is the best time to visit and cheaper prices.

Adventures in Norway & Spitsbergen

hurtigurten

I have never been on a cruise but I love the idea of cruising along the Norwegian coast and then flying across to Spitsbergen.  You can do just that with a Hurtigruten Cruise.

I have visited Spitsbergen whilst I was at university and loved the expedition there camping on glaciers and crossing crevasses.  I would love to show my kids some of the delights of this amazing part of the world.  Norway is one of those countries that I am yet to visit, which is strange as it’s so close.  I will definitely get there one day soon and discover it’s amazing fjords and other delights.

Where To Stay

You fly out to Spitsbergen for the first part of your trip and then fly across to Tromso to start the cruise down to Bergen before flying home.

Must See

You will see the stunning the scenery of both the Norwegian coast, stopping at Tromso, Lofoten and Vesteralen, Trondheim, Bergen and Longyearbyen.  You can also test your hand at other activities whilst on Spitsbergen, including ice fishing,

Best Time To Go

You can travel on the cruise ship anytime between April and March.
