As the weather is still warm and sunny we thought we should visit somewhere new. I’ve heard a lot of good reviews about the SWT Jupiter urban wildlife centre at Grangemouth, so I decided we pay it a visit. The site is free to enter, although a donation box is available if you would like to donate towards the upkeep (£2 suggested donation). It’s quite a winding road through a housing and then industrial estate to find the reserve. We parked just outside the centre, but it didn’t seem like much and we weren’t sure what to expect.
First of all we went for a little wander along the paths, thinking we would come back to the centre on the way back, but when we saw another family with pond dipping nets nearby a large pond, I thought I would head back to the centre to try and find a pond dipping kit to borrow ourselves.
We were given a white tray, I.D. sheet, instructions and 3 nets. I used to do pond dipping with kids at an outdoor centre I worked at, so we knew the basics of what we needed to do. Daddy filled up the tray with water, whilst O and I tried scooping our nets in the water.
A was still asleep on my back at this time, I actually managed to get him in the carrier out of his car seat still asleep!!.
Our first few scoops in the deeper areas didn’t get much of interest, but nearer the edge of the pond we soon managed to get a little Stickleback and some water boatmen. O was very proud of his Stickleback fish swimming around the tray! We continued pond dipping for 45 minutes or so finding lots of different pond creatures. My favourite are the Caddisfly Larvae, which create their own house by ‘gluing’ bits of debris (plants, stones, shell, whatever they find in the water) around their bodies. I love seeing all their individual homes. We gently emptied out the tray of water and creatures whenever it was getting a bit full of leaves etc.
We walked around to some picnic benches to have our lunch and let the boys run around away from the water and even saw a Heron land in a pond nearby. We tried a little more pond dipping before O was getting a bit tired, so we took the nets back and had a walk through the gardens.
One garden was a ‘rubbish’ garden where most things were upcycled, another had a huge bug hotel and bird boxes and the 3rd had a vegetable garden and small pond. The path then leads back to the centre, where we found loads of information on the reserve and wildlife in general. The centre is set up as a classroom, with information around the edge, but it was still very interesting. There are various ‘kits’ and laminated sheets to take out with you on your visit, including the pond dipping, minibeast hunt and tree I.d.
We loved our visit to Jupiter Wildlife Reserve and will definitely be back again!

Wow this looks like great fun!! Had not heard of pond dipping before (clearly need to get out more hehe) so am going to have to look out to see if they do something similar here in the Cotswolds as think the girls would really enjoy it.

Sounds like a lot of fun, so great that you can borrow the kit there as I doubt most people have these things at home. It makes me very jealous that we now live in the desert and don’t have these little park lands near by #whatevertheweather

Sounds like a fantastic place to visit with kids. I love little places like that where you don’t expect too much but end up being pleasantly surprised. I used to love pond dipping-can’t wait to do it again with my child! Also in admiration of your skills in getting a sleeping baby into the carrier-I need a bit more practice I think! #whatevertheweather

Gosh I remember when my girls went to Moray Primary in Grangemouth back in the 1980’s and this place started off as a small wildlife garden on waste ground which the school got involved in planting up.
Nice to see it has grown and expanded and is still going strong over 20 years later. How wonderful to be able to borrow the nets and things to go pond dipping. May well have to pop by one day when we are in the area.
Sabrina (The Mummy Stylist) says
The last time I went pond dipping was on a geography school trip 20 years ago! I remember it being fun and trying to name the species we found. I totally forgot about this activity till I read your post! I’m guessing the boys loved it! I still don’t know if I’d take Tyler yet, it’s so mucky! Sabrina xx #whatevertheweather
Sherry says
Sounds like a lovely adventure. It’s always good to encourage nature based activities, though I’m not so good with pond life! x
Jenny Eaves says
We love getting out in nature, pond dipping has to be a favourite! Fortunately we were given an ID sheet to help us too. 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Ha ha! It wasn’t mucky really, just a few wee splashes if you stay on the boardwalk areas. Unfortunately the last time we went A decided to walk straight into the mud at the edge waist deep! Eek! So much fun though! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
It’s great now! You should definitely pop over and visit if you get a chance, a proper wildlife haven in the middle of an Industrial area with the trains going past. Fantastic that the schools helped plant it all up! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
We don’t normally fish, but need to get their own nets to do that! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
We loved it, could spend hours dipping! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Hope you get the chance to try some, there are so many great things to see around here! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Ha ha! That was a bit of a fluke I think! Although sleeping baby out of the carrier is happening more often now. I was so amazed with everything they had to do on such a small site, definitely shouldn’t rule places out from first impression! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
We definitely have to have a go with rock pooling at some point, not sure where the best place is to try that though, most beaches near us have no rock pools. 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
We need to do that next year, not tried crabbing yet! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
It’s great and of course fantastic for the kids to learn about nature! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
We went again more recently when A was 18 months old and he had a good try at ‘helping’, but didn’t quite understand what was going on! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Isn’t it fab! We need to go back again soon I think! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
The downside to desert living I guess, I hope it’s not too far to get to other areas? 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Exactly, so much better to learn by play! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
It was great fun! Thank you! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
I love introducing the boys to nature in a practical way that they enjoy! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
I’m sure she would! It’s a great activity for wee ones! 🙂 x

That would fit so well with the book, hope you find somewhere good near you! 🙂 x

Yes, we did pretty well I think! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Ooph, hope you have fun there then! 🙂 x

I haven’t done pond dipping before. It sounds great!! I’m sure my little ones will love to do that, specially my 5 years old. Although I think I should wait a little bit longer for the little one (1 year old) to do something like that. Thanks for hosting, 🙂 x

Jenny Eaves says
My 1 year old enjoys it as much as the 4 year old, but he doesn’t really get it! You should definitely try it! 🙂 x
Chloe says
This place sounds so cool. I can’t believe it’s free to enter. I’d definitely pay more than the recommended donation. It’s definitely a place you can revisit again and again. I love places that have lots of little activities like this. We don’t seem to have one near us which is really disappointing. It’s brilliant that they give you little laminates so you can look for things. It’s so educational but tons of fun at the same time. We went rock pooling this week but only to have a peek. Next time we’re definitely going to take a little tray and a net too. Hooray to a busy linky this week! 😀 xx
Mummy here and there says
How adorable that the kids got involved, looks like you had a brill day X
Jenny Eaves says
They loved it! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Thanks Chloe! It’s definitely a great place to visit, need to squeeze in one more visit before autumn is over! 🙂 x
