AD – This is a collaborative post with Flymo.
The first Sunday in April is when most of us get our lawn mowers out for the first grass cut of the year. Usually hidden under a pile of bikes and plant pots in the shed, it’s not easy to get the lawn mower out for the first time since autumn. I don’t know what your lawn mower is like, but our last one took up so much room in the shed it was impossible to get in to find anything!
So there’s no better time to discuss a new compact robotic lawn mower. The Flymo 1200R Robot Lawn Mower doesn’t even need to stay indoors, it sits outside in it’s charging station until it’s ready to use. You can programme the robot lawn mower to mow your lawn on certain days and times throughout the week, so you know that the lawn is always perfectly manicured.
The lawn mower mows in an irregular pattern and doesn’t leave any wheel ruts or marks, plus the cut grass returns to the soil to decompose and add natural fertiliser. The children and I had great fun watching the lawn mower cut the grass at various points around the garden. It’s amazing to see how it cuts through every patch of grass! The great thing is that once you have set-up the law mower you don’t have to lift a finger as it will automatically mow on the set day and time. You don’t even have to be in!
The robotic lawn mower is great for anyone who leads busy lives and it would also be great for elderly relatives who aren’t always able to cut the grass as often as they want.

Getting Started
Setting up the lawn mower can be a little time consuming, but as it’s a one-off it’s worth it. You will need to choose a part of the garden to place the charging station. Once that is in place and you have the lawn mower plugged in and charging you can go about setting up the boundary wire.
The boundary wire is placed around the edge of the grass at a certain distance from walls or uneven surfaces. This has to be pegged in and connected to the charging station. Remember to leave a loop of wire around the boundary to connect the guide wire in. The guide wire’s main aim is to guide the lawn mower back to the charging station or to far away parts of the garden. It’s fairly straightforward, although you will need to make sure that the distance from the boundary wire to any dips is correct, otherwise you may end out cutting through the boundary wire like we did. Fortunately we could fix this easily enough with one of the connectors provided.
The boundary wire is what stops the lawn mower from hitting obstacles or getting stuck on uneven ground. It also has high sensitivity collision sensors and stops blades turning if lifted. Very useful when you have children racing around!
Programming
To programme the lawn mower you need to press the large stop button on top and then create a pin code to use and follow the instructions to set time and date. Using the control pad you can choose whether you would like the lawn mower to run at certain times or just when you choose to.
Next to the computer display panel is a dial which you can turn to cut the grass longer or shorter, from 2-5 cm. We went with 3 cm for the first cut, although depending how long we leave the grass it might well need to be cut more.
Ease of Use
It took around 1 hour to set up the lawn mower and a bit longer for it to be fully charged and ready to mow. Everything you need is included, just follow through the instructions step-by-step. The most time consuming part is laying the boundary wire and ensuring it isn’t too close to the edge of the lawn.
The programming display seems fairly straightforward and intuitive, which definitely makes life easier. Although it does seem strange to leave the lawn mower outside, it is probably a good idea to keep it in a section of the garden that isn’t used too often. We even noticed some pictures online of a kennel being used to store the robotic lawn mower and it’s charger!
