We haven’t been managing much outdoor exploration of late, mainly because of the awful wind and rain we’ve had here in Scotland. However we still get out most days, even if it’s just a walk to the library or the shop.
Last Sunday we were visiting the boys grandparents in the Scottish Borders and as it was the first nice day in a while we decided to go out for a walk in the frost. Well, to be honest the boys were a bit hyper and we wanted to get some energy out!
However, as O refused to go out it was just me, the husband and little Mr A. I don’t think it’s ever been just the three of us before (at least since the day he was born!), so it was quite nice for us both to have some alone time together with A.
We walked out and realised it really was rather cold as we started crunching along the grassy bank and breaking the ice apart in puddles.
Puddles are always a highlight with Mr A, but this is the first time he has experienced ice in them and he loved it. He has added the word ‘ice’ to his vocabulary now!
At the bottom of the hill we had a look round at some of the tractors and other machines, Mr A still loving the icy puddles, until he fell in one and had soggy muddy gloves. We looked around at a few more machines before heading back to the house to warm up the chilly wet hands of Mr A.
Have you had trouble getting out recently?
Do you have to take spare gloves for your kids?!

I hear there’s now snow in Scotland? I love crunching ice in puddles and it’s so nice to get out when it’s not pouring down with rain, even if it is cold. Thanks for hosting x

Frosty puddles look loads of fun, I can’t wait for Little Button to experience these. You are so great to brave the weather, even when its icy. We have a drawer full to hats and gloves as button is always losing hers, but never quite remember to carry an extra pair. It’s quite damp and mild in London at the moment. #WhateverTheWeather

Icy frosty puddles are so much fun. My children love a nice crisp walk investigating ice. It must have been a nice treat to spend time alone with little Mr A.

Frost, Ice and Puddles !! Dreamy combination for Christmas. Here in Dubai we await winters and they are our season for outdoors. But I would mind a bit of snow. 🙂 Merry Christmas!

Not much chance of any ice down here in the south at the moment – so mild! Not that I’m complaining…makes it so much easier to get out and about. My daughter has FINALLY accepted wearing gloves – she wasn’t a fan last winter & now loves them. I love seeing your pics of rural life – the tractor is awesome! #whatevertheweather

Here in Florida we are able to get out everyday as its still in the 80s!! However I do wish it was cooler. Its so much more refreshing to take a walk in brisk cool weather and not still be sweating! We were able to go up north for a week. It was so strange to have to bundle up and it took a while for the kids to get used to hats and gloves but they loved it! Looks like you are making the best of your weather despite the rain and cold! Thanks for hosting!

Nothing like some icy puddle crunching although soggy gloves are less good. Glad you got out in the beautiful borders.

He looks so pleased with that tractor. We’ve been lucky down South – still very mild here and we escaped the terrible floods. Glad you were able to get out for a bit anyway. #whatevertheweather

Yep I always take lots of spare gloves if we know it is going to be cold, hand warmers are useful too!! #whatevertheweather

My Ethan loves puddles with ice. Once, he tried to take it home with us! lol! Great job for braving the cold – I really need to be more active than I am at the moment I think – so the kids can also experience ice in the puddle too! Thank you for sharing. 🙂

We live in South Wales and have been struggling to get out due to the rain. But like you we try daily. My babies haven’t seen ice yet can’t wait for the snow experience with them #whatevertheweather

Funnily enough we took advantage of the Scottish frost on Sunday to go out on a family walk. Love the photos! M was so confused by ice instead of puddles the other week and was so disappointed that she could not jump in them!

It’s so crazy reading about your chilly days out. We’re seriously having temperatures of about 14 degrees at the moment in Cornwall. It’s mad! Every year my whole family gets the sniffles around November/December. It’s been so warm we don’t need any layers at all. It’s madness. I’m sort of jealous because I love frosty days. Although I think Evie would get cross if puddles were icy haha. I’m glad you managed to get some time together. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas! xxx

Snow further north, but we’ve only had little showers and then lying for a short while. 🙂 x

Lol, it’s carnage if we stay inside for too long, so needs must, whatever the weather we’ll be out! 🙂 x

It was lovely to have time together with just one small person. 🙂 x

Hee hee, you should come over to Scotland then! 🙂 xx

That’s great that she’s wearing gloves now, A will wear them for a while, but he’s still at the age where they seem to be either too big or too small, so he gets annoyed and takes them off! 🙂 x

I can’t imagine a warm winter, it seems so alien to me! It must have been nice for the kids to go up north and experience a change in the temperature? 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Crunching through puddles is definitely great fun, must remember the spare gloves next time though! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Glad you’ve escaped the flooding, but hope you get some winter snow and ice soon! 🙂 x
Jenny Eaves says
Yes, we will be adding them in from now on too. 🙂 x

Ha ha, I don’t know how far my two would get with a slab of ice, they would probably try and eat it … Xx

They will love the ice when they see it! 🙂 x

Thank you! Merry Christmas! 🙂 x

Aww, poor girl, no puddles to splash in. At least it’s crunchy instead! 🙂 x

You will have to go up North one year to get some snow and ice for Christmas! It is strange that there’s such a difference in temperature on our little island! 🙂 x
