Last year I needle felted a pair of mushrooms onto a wood slice for a friends birthday gift. I meant to make my own at the same time as I loved it so much, but never had a chance until now.
Needle felting takes a little skill, but it’s really not as difficult as it looks, although you probably will prick your fingers a fair few times when you first start!
For this craft you will need:
Wood slice (sanded smooth);
Needle felting needle;
Small piece of foam packaging;
Wool roving in various colours (I used green, cream, red and brown);
Pipe cleaner;
Large piece of foam or needle felt pad;
Scissors; and
Hot glue/strong glue.
Instructions:
- Cut a small piece of foam into a little mound smaller than the size of your wood slice, glue on to the wood slice.
- Pull off a small piece of green roving wool, place on top of the foam on the wood slice and gently poke the needle in until it feels secure, but is a little loose like moss, repeat until fully covered in green.
- Cut off a 2 inch length of pipe cleaner and wrap cream coloured roving around it’s length.
- Gently and repeatedly poke the needle through the wool around the pipe cleaner (the metal in the pipe cleaner make this bit quite fiddly, but stick at it until it’s all fairly well knitted together).
- Next take the colour you wish for the top of the mushroom. Take off a good size chunk and roll into a ball. Place on top of a needle felting mat or a piece of foam and repeatedly stab with the needle, turning it around every so often so it doesn’t attach to the surface.
- Add more of the mushroom colour and whilst felting squash into a mushroom shape, needle felting as you go.
- Add any extra details to the mushroom, such as tiny dots (roll tiny little balls of roving and needle onto the mushroom gently).
- Poke the covered pipe cleaner through the base of the mushroom head and gently needle felt together around the top of the pipe cleaner.
- Poke the pipe cleaner part of the mushroom into the foam base and needle felt around the base if necessary to attach it well.
- Create as many mushrooms in whichever colour you choose as per above instructions.
