Cornwall’s surf and sand – UK family break
Our first suggestion needs little introduction, as Cornwall remains one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. Families have been making their way down to the southwestern tip of the country for decades, which means it can get a little busy during peak times!

Don’t be put off by the thought of crowds, with hundreds of beaches to choose from along Cornwall’s coastline you can find a quiet slice of sandy relaxation. It’s not all about the sands, as the Cornish waves are a haven for surfing and other water sports. Whether you’ve never tried your feet on a board before or are a seasoned wave-rider, you’ll enjoy your time out in the water.
Not to mention the various local treats you can sample, from traditional Cornish cream teas to freshly made ice cream or Cornish pasties.
Mountains and lochs in the Scottish Highlands
Heading almost entirely in the other direction, the Scottish Highlands might have chillier temperatures but the incredible scenery more than makes up for that. Besides, if your family wants to spend the holiday exploring some of this untamed wilderness then the workout should balance out any chill!

For the brave, there’s the challenge of tackling Ben Nevis, the tallest peak not just in Scotland but the whole of the British Isles. But there are plenty of gentler inclines and other scenic trails throughout the Highlands to explore if that’s a little too tall for now. Or, if you’d prefer less of an incline, try paddleboarding across some of the region’s lochs.
And you can’t visit Scotland without at least a passing visit to Loch Ness, just to see if there are any signs of Nessie!
Prehistoric adventures along the Jurassic Coast

For the prehistorical rather than the mythological, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is the ideal site for a fossil hunting adventure. The cliffs here are a geological showcase where you can see rocks representing over 185 million years of history, and more than a few fossils to boot.
Explore the beaches and take part in guided tours to search for the remains of ancient sea creatures and the shells of clams that were alive millions of years ago. It’s an excellent way to occupy young minds by checking the various rocks on the beach just in case one of them is hiding a special fossil!
The extensive coastal path is also perfect for leisurely walks set against the backdrop of the impressive geological landmarks and the soothing sounds of the sea below.
