Disclosure: This is a collaborative post about quality of tyres
The quality of your ride means how smoothly the car drives. This is often dependent on the tyres you have. However, this is not always the case, and some other possibilities must be ruled out before you change your tyres.
Table of Contents
Suspension
If your suspension is going, this means that the long metal springs that support the chassis evenly over the four wheels has an issue, and this can manifest in a number of ways. You may find that the car seems to be bouncing along in long undulating waves – which can be quite nauseating; or you may find that you are feeling every small bump and jolt magnified to the point of discomfort.
Brakes
If your brake pads are too close to the rim, they can pull, making your ride feel skewed and effortful. It is often very noisy too, as the brake pads scrape on the steel or alloy edge. If the problem is not yet too serious, you may only notice it when you are braking from a high speed: the car will judder, jerk or slow unevenly.
Once these problems have been eliminated and you still have a noisy or uncomfortable ride, you can assume that the problem lies with your tyre quality, especially if your vehicle has budget tyres fitted to it. However, before you rush off to buy a new set of tyres, take the following steps.
Inflation
Make sure your tyres are inflated to within the range recommended by the manufacturers. This will ensure that the tyre is perfectly conformed to the road’s surface, giving you good grip and a smooth and comfortable ride.
Tread Depth/ Wear
Check your wheels for wear and tear. This often occurs unevenly, being worse on the front tyres and on outside tyre edges. Left unchecked it can cause an enormous problem for you, as well as making your ride feel precarious and unsafe. There is a relatively simple and cheap solution. You can have your tyres rotated, switching the back to the front and swapping left and right. So outside edges become inside edges. This can effectively double the life of your tyres and keep you driving happily for a while longer.
Align and Balance
Finally, have your wheels aligned and balanced. If these two aspects are not perfectly done it can make your ride noisy, slow, and generally uncomfortable. This is because the tyres fight one another instead of working together to support the vehicle.
Once you have completed all these checks: if your ride is still uncomfortable, it might be time to invest in a new set of tyres: the best quality that you can afford.
