The Abbey House Hotel – Barrow-In-Furness

Location

The Abbey House Hotel is at the North of the town Barrow-In-Furness. Named after Furness Abbey (a 2 minute walk down the path from the hotel). The location is perfect for arriving from the East via either the M6 (1 hour) or the Lake District National Park (20 minutes from Windermere).

A great location for visiting both nearby Barrow-In-Furness area as well as North into the Lake District National Park. You can check more about the Barrow area at the Visit Barrow website here.

The Hotel

The hotel was built in 1914 (according to the carving above the main door!). It definitely has the feel of an old manor house, with the gorgeous red sandstone. Inside you will find plenty of modern touches, including a rather pink nook and a cherry tree.

However the old arched glass windows give an ideas of how it must have looked originally. The kids liked exploring the different staircases and looking over into the large reception room below. The hotel often hosts wedding receptions and I can see why!

There are modern additions to the hotel, including the large dining area. Which is also where you can eat the included buffet breakfast each morning.

We had a lovely double bedroom, with a huge double bed and and a sofa bed for the kids. It was a great size for the 3 of us. The beautiful ornate windows gives the room a regal feel, as does the rich purple decor.

The room also had a large television above the fireplace and a desk for use by occupants too. By the window were two seats to relax in, which the kids were happy to sit in and look out the window. The bathroom was small, but adequate for us.

Oscar’s Restaurant

Oscar’s restaurant is in the hotels dining area, just off the bar. It’s beautiful with the ornate windows and beautiful artwork.

There is a huge open fire and plush seats at the tables. Although you’re probably not going to visit just for how the restaurant looks. The food itself is rather important!

The children had their own menus to choose from, which was very reasonably priced. Both easily found something to eat. They were also handed some pencils and had a great time drawing and colouring in the back of the menus!

I chose 3 different courses, a delicious smoked salmon starter, Sea Bream main course and then a chocolate and marmalade tart. All were beautifully laid out and tasted delicious.

The Grounds

There are 14 acres of garden and woodland around the Abbey House Hotel. It’s perfect for the kids to run around and explore whilst waiting to go for dinner!

It’s also just a few minutes walking down the path from the hotel to Furness Abbey. I didn’t actually realise it was that close until we walked down the path! Check the opening times online, but it’s a good place to visit either in the morning or late afternoon when you can park at the hotel and walk down.

What To Do In The Area

Favourites for us were definitely the Dock Museum with the history of the area, South Walney Nature reserve for the beautiful scenery and wildlife, and South Lakes Safari Zoo for the animals. It’s also close to the Lake District where you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes.

Between April and October you may also like to visit the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway. With steam trains connecting to lakeside cruises in the Lake District, it’s a fantastic adventure for everyone.
