We were recently invited to Glasgow for the launch of the new McDonald’s Happy Reader Initiative. For the next 6 weeks every Happy Meal will contain a book with excerpts from Roald Dahl’s fantastic books.
Both my boys love books and have been bringing us books to read to them ever since they learnt to crawl! We read to them every day, although we haven’t read much Roald Dahl yet, however I think that is about to change after this event.
As part of the event we were treated to a performance of an excerpt from James and the Giant Peach. A was hungry and too busy looking for more food, but O was entranced and has been talking to us about the story ever since, we will definitely be getting the full story so he can find out what happens next.
We were given a set of the books that are given out in the Happy Meals and read most of them to O on the way home on the train. There are definitely some that he enjoyed more than others, but it’s a great idea to get a taste for which books they’re interested in and which we should get out from the library or buy.
McDonald’s have also created the Happy Studio App, which supports the books and brings them to life with sounds and animations using voice recognition as you read the story. The App also includes 16 fun games and activities all around the Roald Dahl stories.
What do you think of McDonald’s offering books in Happy Meals instead of toys?
