Where is Billund?
Billund is a town in South Denmark, famous for being the home of Lego! You can get flights direct to Billund from Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and London. It’s also possible to take the train from Copenhagen to nearby Vejle and then the bus from there to Billund.
For us it was easiest to simply fly direct from Edinburgh to Billund with Ryanair. Flights were cheap and for a long weekend break we could fit everything in our under seat hand luggage bags! Avoiding baggage fees meant we could spend more on our trip!
If you are travelling from the airport at Billund to Lego Castle Hotel by bus, then make sure you have a few Danish Krone for the fare. It’s not much, but you will need to pay! You can get money out at the ATM inside the exit from the airport arrivals.
Lego Castle Hotel
The Lego Castle Hotel is literally across the road from Legoland Billund. You can walk across the car park, along the path signposted Legoland and you’re there. Around a 2 minute walk, including crossing the road.
So this is the perfect place to base yourself for visiting Legoland! It’s also only a 10 minute walk into town to visit Lego House.
Outdoors

When you first arrive at the Lego Castle Hotel you will be immediately wowed by the giant castle’s in front of you! There are two castles, one is mainly themed on knights and the other on wizards. We stayed in the Wizard castle hotel, although you will need to enter the knights castle for reception and the dining room.
Outside each castle is a small children’s play park. These are fab for the kids to let off a little steam when they’re very excited about all the Lego fun they’re having. You will also find a 3rd, and much larger children’s play area around the back of the Knights castle. The play park is shaped like a castle and a favourite place for kids to congregate after breakfast and before dinner!
Another fun outdoor feature are the Lego sculptures outside the castles. Many of them make sounds too. Our favourite was the knight attacking the dragon, she was particularly funny!
Reception at Lego Castle Hotel

The Knights Castle has the reception area on the ground floor. The desks are manned throughout the day and the staff are always friendly and helpful. They can also speak brilliant English (just like most Danish people we came across!). You can check in at reception from around 3pm, although you may be lucky if it’s quiet and check-in earlier.
If you do arrive before your room is ready you can leave luggage in the storage room beside reception. We used the luggage storage room on our last day as our flight wasn’t until the evening.
Also in the reception area is a small shop with snacks, drinks and gifts to buy. There is a seating area with television showing various kids TV programmes. Plus two large pits of Lego near the entrance to build to your heart’s content. You can also use this Lego to build something for the daily competition. The theme changes regularly, but when we were there it was to build an egg! Winners are announced on a nearby board each morning. There is also another competition to enter and win a Lego prize in the booklet given to all children on arrival. It involves finding different letters around the hotels!
The Rooms
We stayed in the wizard hotel, so our room was wizard themed. It was perfect for our two Lego and Harry Potter mad children! There was a lot of excitement just walking along the corridor to the room with all the amazing decor.

As you open the bedroom door watch your kids faces as they light up and race about exploring the bedroom! The kids have bunk beds, with a 3rd bed for families of 5 that can be pulled out from the base. The adults have a double bed just round the corner by the window. For wizard rooms there are Lego sculptures featuring owls and light up potions! The carpet and walls are all highly decorated with Lego wizarding themes.
A box of Lego is provided to play with during your stay at the hotel, plus a board below the TV to display items. Don’t forget to check out the safe above the Lego, you will need to complete a challenge to get the code! All details for the challenge are in the booklet the kids were given on arrival.

Breakfast and Dinner
A buffet breakfast is included with your stay, this is in the dining room inside the knights castle. There are plenty of options to choose from, including hot breakfast items, cereal, toast and danish pastries. There’s definitely plenty for everyone!

You can also book to eat dinner at the hotel. This is also buffet style, but includes unlimited alcohol. Because of this it’s VERY expensive, I don’t drink wine or beer and so couldn’t make the most of this, making it feel a bit too expensive for us. My husband stoically put in effort to drink as much beer as he could to make it worthwhile, but that still didn’t amount to many! The food was good, however I would prefer if there was an option to book the buffet meal without the unlimited alcohol to make it cheaper and the price more accessible to those who don’t drink alcohol. On other nights we ordered takeaways to be delivered to the hotel, just don’t trust the timings on Just Eat!
Legoland Billund and Lego House

The main reason to stay at the Lego Castle Hotel in Billund is to visit Legoland Billund and Lego House. As mentioned earlier in this post they are both close by. With Legoland right across the road and just a 10 minute walk into town to visit Lego House.
You can read more about Lego House and Legoland Billund in this post here.
There is also a water park called Lalandia just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. This is where we spent our last day before catching the plane home!
