I love creating little gifts for family and friend’s out of what we have at home or using natural materials. I recently received a box full of lovely jars from The Bottle Company South (they really do have almost every type of bottle and jar you could need!) and have enjoyed using them to create some lovely gift ideas.
I’m sure it has not escaped the notice of anyone that next weekend is Mother’s Day and whether you are making a gift for your own mum or your kids are making it for theirs, there are so many great ideas out there!
Here are 4 ideas for you to make Mother’s Day gifts using jars.
1. Origami Floating Lilies.
To create this gorgeous little jar you will need something to decorate the bottom of the jar, coloured sand or gravel for fish tanks would be perfect or you can use glass gems or even sea glass as I have. Create several tiny origami water lilies with origami square paper using this tutorial I found (I tested several tutorials and the lilies were all too big, but this one is perfect). Fill the jar partway up with water and add the lilies to the top of the water.
I also tied a little tag on with thread. I love this jar and think it’s a nice alternative to flowers.
2. Tinted Vase.
There are several different methods to tint jars, from using specially designed liquids for glass tinting to this one that uses glue, food colouring, water and the oven. It worked well, although I might use more food colouring next time for a stronger colour.
I added flowers to the vase with a little water, although it would look equally good with some fake flowers and no water if you are worried about the water damaging the tinted glass.
3. Origami Lucky Stars from the luckiest son/daughter in the world.
For this jar you will need another origami tutorial, although this one is incredibly simple and will not require much skill at all! You will need coloured paper, or even magazines or junk mail and cut them into long strips to begin. Check out this tutorial from Red Ted Art.
I also decorated the lid with tissue paper, but you can cover or paint however you like.
Fill your jar with stars and write a tag. I wrote ‘Happy Mother’s Day – a jar full of lucky stars from the luckiest daughter in the world’.
4. Jar of Chocoaltes.
You can fill up your jar with anything your loved one would like, but I know I personally would love a jar full of chocolates! You can decorate the lid with paint or whatever you have to hand and add a little tag.
The jars I am using are great quality and I love the shapes, there is such a variety of style and sizes available on The Bottle Company South, I would definitely recommend buying jars (or bottles!) from them.
So what do you think? Which gift jar would you like to receive?
